Rectangle Shape Worksheet for Kids

A rectangle is a shape with 4 straight sides and 4 corners, just like a square. The difference is that a rectangle has two long sides and two short sides, so it looks stretched out rather than perfectly even. Each of its four corners still makes a neat right angle.

When children aged 2 to 7 trace a rectangle, they practise drawing long lines and short lines and stopping carefully at each corner. This helps build steady hand control and teaches them how lengths can be different within one shape.

Rectangles are some of the most common shapes around us. A door, a storybook, a mobile phone, a brick, a notebook and a chocolate bar are all rectangles. Comparing the long and short sides together gives children a gentle first taste of measuring and early maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are similar because both have four sides and four corners, but a rectangle has two long sides and two short sides, while a square has four sides that are all equal.

Lay a notebook flat and run your child's finger along the long edge, then the short edge, saying long and short out loud. Comparing the two helps the idea stick.

Doors, books, phones, televisions and beds are all rectangles. Going on a quick rectangle hunt around the house makes a lovely, easy learning game.
