Letter L Phonics Worksheet — the /l/ sound

The letter L makes the /l/ sound you hear at the start of Lion, Leaf and Lamp. It is a soft, singing sound made by touching the tip of your tongue to the ridge behind your top teeth and letting your voice flow, "llll". Because you can hold it, it is a lovely stretchy sound for practice, "llll-ion".

This worksheet helps children aged 2 to 7 trace the letter L, say its /l/ sound and match it to friendly pictures like a Ladder, a Lemon and a colourful Lollipop. Holding the sound and pretending to lick a Lollipop makes the practice playful and easy to remember.

When a child hears that Lion, Leaf and Lamp all begin with /l/, they are learning to listen for beginning sounds, which is the heart of early reading. Since /l/ can be stretched, it is perfect for showing how words begin and how sounds blend together. Keep it gentle and fun, and praise every clear "l" your little one makes.
