Letter G Phonics Worksheet — the /g/ sound

The letter G most often makes the hard /g/ sound you hear at the start of Goat, Gate and Garden. It is a voiced sound made at the back of the mouth, a little like /k/ but with a gentle buzz, "g, g, Goat". Place your child's hand on their throat so they can feel the buzz when they say it.

This worksheet helps children aged 2 to 7 trace the letter G, say its /g/ sound and match it to cheerful pictures like a Goose, a bunch of Grapes and a happy Goat. We stick to hard /g/ words here, because G can also make a soft /j/ sound in words like giraffe, which is best saved for later learning.

When a child hears that Goat, Gate and Garden all begin with /g/, they are practising the skill of listening for beginning sounds. That careful listening is exactly what turns letters into reading. Keep the sessions short and giggly, and cheer for every clear "g" your little one makes.

Free for home and classroom use. The preview shows a sample of the printable worksheet.
