What Are the Gujarati Mulakshar?

Mulakshar (મૂળાક્ષર) are the basic letters of the Gujarati alphabet — the swar (vowels) and vyanjan (consonants) that combine to build every Gujarati word. Together they make up 48 letters: 12 swar and 36 vyanjan, including the joined letters ળ, ક્ષ and જ્ઞ.

Gujarati uses its own script, closely related to Devanagari (the script of Hindi and Marathi) but with one big difference for little hands: Gujarati letters have no shirorekha, the horizontal line across the top. The shapes are rounder and more open, which many children find friendly to trace.

At What Age Should a Child Start Learning Gujarati Letters?

Most children are ready to recognise Gujarati letters from around age 3, and to begin tracing them by age 4 to 5, once they can hold a crayon and copy simple lines and curves. Before that, saying letters aloud, singing the કક્કો and pointing them out around the house all build a strong base.

Every child is different, so follow your little one's interest rather than the calendar. Short, joyful sessions of 5 to 10 minutes work far better than long ones, and there is no rush — the goal is comfort and confidence, not speed.

Step 1: Start with the 12 Swar (Vowels)

Begin with the swar, because they carry the vowel sounds every syllable needs. Teach them in order, a few at a time, and always pair each letter with a word your child already knows so the sound has meaning.

Say the sound first, then trace the shape. Keep it playful — point out the letter in books, on signs and on food packets so your child spots it in the real world.

• Week 1: અ (a) for અનાનસ (pineapple), આ (aa) for આકાશ (sky)
• Week 2: ઇ (i) for ઇનામ (prize), ઈ (ee) for ઈંડું (egg)
• Week 3: ઉ (u) for ઉંદર (mouse), ઊ, એ (e) for એલચી (cardamom)
• Then ઐ, ઓ, ઔ, and finally અં and અઃ

Step 2: Move to the 36 Vyanjan (Consonants)

Once the swar feel familiar, move to the vyanjan — the consonants that make up most of the alphabet. Don't try to teach all 36 at once. Group them the way the કક્કો is recited, a small set at a time, and celebrate finishing each row.

Keep linking every consonant to a picture word so it sticks: ક (ka) for કબૂતર (pigeon), ગ (ga) for ગાય (cow), ઘ (gha) for ઘર (home), ચ (cha) for ચકલી (sparrow), પ (pa) for પોપટ (parrot), મ (ma) for મોર (peacock).

• Start with the ક-વર્ગ: ક, ખ, ગ, ઘ, ઙ
• Then ચ, છ, જ, ઝ, ઞ — and onward group by group
• Save the joined letters ળ, ક્ષ and જ્ઞ for last
• One new row every few days is plenty — repetition beats rushing

Step 3: Barakhadi — the Bridge to Reading

Learning single letters is only half the journey. Barakhadi (બારાખડી) is what turns letters into reading: each consonant is joined with the twelve vowel signs (matras) to make its full set of sounds — ક, કા, કિ, કી, કુ, કૂ, કે, કૈ, કો, કૌ, કં, કઃ.

Teach barakhadi one consonant at a time. Once your child can read and write all twelve forms of ક, the very same pattern unlocks every other consonant — and that's the moment reading starts to click.

• Say each form aloud: ka, kaa, ki, kee, ku, koo…
• Point out the vowel sign that changes each time

The 5-Step Method to Teach Any Gujarati Letter

Whatever the letter, the same gentle routine works every time. It takes about five minutes and keeps practice happy rather than heavy.

• 1. Say it: make the sound aloud together, a few times
• 2. Show it: point to the model letter and trace it in the air
• 3. Trace it: guide your child over the grey letter on the worksheet
• 4. Link it: name the example word and picture (ગ for ગાય)
• 5. Celebrate: a high five and a re-print tomorrow to revise

A Simple Weekly Gujarati Routine That Works

Consistency matters more than length. A short daily habit — one letter, five minutes — will take your child further than an occasional long session. Weave Gujarati into everyday life so the letters live outside the worksheet too.

Read a Gujarati storybook together, count in Gujarati (એક, બે, ત્રણ), and talk to grandparents in the mother tongue. Learning your language connects children to family, culture and identity — and research shows a strong first language helps English come more easily too.
